Overview

Join best selling photographer Doug Harman and Photographer and renowned Photoshop Artist Sue Chapman ARPS, CPAGB for their 2017 photography and Photoshop retreat where we will be shooting Spring landscapes, Canterbury Cathedral,  “Darling Buds of May country”, Dungeness, Faversham & Rye.

Our retreats cater to the relative beginner from our base of Chilston Park (below) where you’ll stay for the duration of the retreats; Chilston Park has, over the years, been home to eminent politicians, writers, lords and viscounts. Today it is a classic British country house hotel with style and charm, and with a unique styling, enhanced by antiques, some as old as the 17th century manor house.

The main house staircaseSet back from tree-lined lanes, the manor house at Chilston Park sits in 22 acres of parkland and features a two AA Rosette restaurant. The Grade I listed hotel offers a wide variety of unique feature bedrooms, from mews Classic double rooms to the Manor House master suites. Your accommodation will be in some of the Mews Cottages but should you so wish, you may upgrade to one of their luxury room or suites if availability permits. Please inquire and we will advise upgrade prices.

Dining in Culpeppers RestaurantChilston Park Hotel retreats includes luxury accommodation and fine dining for your entire two week stay, with tuition on each of the week days. The weekend is yours to relax and enjoy as you wish. If you are feeling adventurous perhaps a trip to London followed by a theatre performance might liven up your Saturday evening, or maybe for those not feeling quite so energetic a tour around some of our lovely Kentish villages photographing some of our historic buildings might suit you better? The coast is a stones throw away and we have many interesting towns and sandy beaches you might like to explore?

You may arrive at Chilston Park any time after 1500 hrs and settle yourself into your room. Doug and Sue will meet you for an introductory chat between 1700 and 1800 hrs for a pre-dinner drink and ensure  you are comfortably ensconced in your new surroundings.  You will then have an hour or so of free time before your first evening meal, where you will be able to chat with and get to know your fellow retreat members.

On the following morning, after a hearty breakfast, the work starts at 1000 hrs.  Doug and Sue will meet you in the conference room and after introductions we will kick off by ensuring you know how to get the most from your photographic gear and then, to get your photographic juices flowing properly, we will focus on capturing Kentish spring landscapes. You’ll be expertly guided on techniques and technical aspects of capturing all the locations visited to best effect using a variety of photo-techniques.

The old anchor-0819During your stay we will head to a variety of local destinations all having their own unique characteristics including the wonderful city of Canterbury with its bustling streets full of character, the beautiful Canterbury Cathedral. Other locations include the stunning Leeds Castle (reputedly one the World’s most beautiful castles; we shall also venture out to Dungeness, an amazing open seascape full of amazing skies, old fishing boats, tumbledown fishing cottages and shacks, shingle beaches and amazing wildlife, all of which make a wonderful selection of superb photographic opportunities. Time permitting we also hope to visit either the historic town of Faversham and it’s creek full of boats and tumbledown shacks or possibly Rye with it’s historic houses full of character and charm.

On the days between each location shoot, you will get time to work on your images using industry leading software Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom. You’ll be taken through the aspects of image organisation, editing and use of the software tools to fully realise your creativity and photo-artistry.

Proposed Itinerary and Course Plan*

  •       Day 1  Familiarise yourself with your camera; from buttons and dials to focal lengths, shutter speeds and depth of field. (PM: Shoot in and around location)
  •       Day 2 Practical shoot – Low light  and landscapes. Use aperture control, ISO, shutter speeds and metering on location and get superb landscapes and low-light photos. (AM – Canterbury Cathedral. Either back to base for light lunch or drive to Faversham, picnic lunch then afternoon shooting OR return to base*)
  •       Day 3 Introduction to Lightroom. Importing, editing and exporting. Managing your files and folders. How it all works. Start to grade and process your images.
  •       Day 4 Introduction to Photoshop. Mastering Layers – the foundations for building Photoshop confidence.
  •       Day 5 Shooting for High Dynamic Range (HDR) and  mono photography. Dungeness (+ Fish and chip lunch)
  •       Day 6 Street and Candid portraiture – Local Villages and Canterbury with lunch at The Ambrette in Canterbury
  •       Day 7 Photoshop’s in-depth features and how to use them.
  •       Day 8 HDR techniques, actions, text and textures in Photoshop.
  •       Day 9 Surprise location shoot.  Students “go it alone”, utilising skills learnt so far. (Day trip to a stunning local castle)
  •       Day 10 Enhance your best image from the week and enter the student competition.
  •      There are two gala dinners for our guests, one on the first and one on the last Friday of your stay; the last gala dinner includes a prize giving for the best students and photographs of the workshop.

What You Need to bring…

Day time clothing

  • Sturdy waterproof walking shoes or walking boots, mid-weight socks, light gloves, hat and waterproof / windproof jacket.

  • A mix of layered tops and thin fleeces so you can build up or remove layers for the days when we are out walking are highly recommended to cope with the varied conditions that April can bring.
  • April is normally a mildish month of the year with average temperatures between 4 °C and 12°C, although freezing temperature with the occasional snow flurries can rear their heads on occasions!

Evening

Smart casual wear for the normal evening meals. Smart evening wear for the two formal Friday night dinners.

Camera gear and accessories

You will need a camera where you are able to control aperture, shutter speeds and ISO (sensitivity). It does not need to be an SLR however. Additionally…

  • A reasonable capacity memory card, such as 8GB – or higher – compatible with your camera.
  • If you have a selection of lenses, then please feel free to bring them with you.
  • A tripod would be beneficial but not necessary. (NOT a table top tripod)
  • Your laptop with a minimum RAM of 4GB.  8GB or higher preferable. Ideally with either Photoshop CS6 (or Creative Cloud) and additionally Lightroom.

Should you not have this software pre-installed on your PC we can help you download a free 30 day trial directly from Adobe which will be fine for the duration of the course.

NB: A tablet device will not suffice for the image editing tasks used on this retreat.

Prices are based on single occupancy but should you wish to bring a friend and share a room please send us an email and we will send you a quote accordingly. If you wish to bring a partner to simply partake of the luxurious surroundings and not get involved in our workshops, that’s not a problem, but you’ll need to speak with the hotel directly and settle the cost for your partner separately with the hotel/venue. Should your partner wish to accompany you on the outings out but not the workshops please contact us for a separate quote accordingly.

  • All lodging and meals at Chilston Park Hotel or alternative restaurants between April 17th to April 29th 2016.
  • Two formal evening dinners on each Friday night (will include some beverages)
  • Transportation to all of our tuition trips out during the weekdays. Transportation to and from our photographic locations is a combination of cars / minivans and/or Taxis, but all have with plenty of room for us and our photo gear and their costs is also included in the price of the workshop.
  • Photographic and photo editing and guiding / instruction on the weekdays.
  • Warnborough College Certificate of Completion.

What’s not included:

  • Flights/travel to and from your home, including insurance.
  • Visa or passport fees.
  • Any beverages alcoholic or otherwise except on the Friday evening special dinners as detailed above.
  • Trips and transport at the weekends.
  • Anything not specifically listed as “included” above.

Your deposit of £1750 will secure your place in this workshop. Final payment is due 90 days prior to start date.

Do you have a partner that enjoys painting or sketching or perhaps would simply like to accompany you and visit some of our local towns and shops? If so please jot us an email and we will detail additional costs. The majority of our rooms are doubles but some do have single beds, so room sharing both for partners and / or a friend who might or might not attend the full retreat are very welcome to attend too. Partners should note however that there will be some additional costs for breakfasts and evening meals. Should our retreats not be full and we have space then you might also be able to attend outings with us too although entrance fees will need to be covered accordingly.
